Né en 1943 à Kingston, Ras Michael grandit dans une communauté rasta où il développe très vite ses talents de percussionniste Niyabinghi. Il forme le collectif de musiciens The Sons of Negus pour l'accompagner en concert ou sur certains morceaux de Burning Spear, Bob Marley & the Wailers ou encore Black Uhuru…
Il sort l'album Rastafari en 1975 chez Grounation, avec comme premier titre None a Jah Jah Children No Cry :
